A lot of the engineers have left recently and I hear that they have some unhappy staff . That said it is a huge company with very nice customers . Due to the company expanding its a bit unsettled at the moment but worth a try .

During my years at Equinix I have the chance to see this company grew from few employees to a very successful public traded enterprise. The transition was not easy but something that Equinix was able to stick to it was the startup sprit. Great place to work and grow professionally and personally.

Culture is cancerous and management doesn't see to value their employees. Their is no work life balance, which is what they sell you on. They force you to work a 12hr schedule and make you come in on days off. This is not a great place to work, which is why I am no longer there.

Run away if you are working for the Marketing team

I was a contractor and while I worked with some incredible and nice people most of the time, there were some from the Marketing team that were evil. So much drama was created there. I barely even knew what Equinix did because Marketing does a horrible job communicating this. The Marketing person at the top was grandfathered into her job and was horrible at it. She likes to dangle a piece of cheese in front of the contractor knowing full well that it will be hard to transform into a FTE.

My experience and staffing overview.

I have 11 years military experience up to Staff Non-commissioned officer, 4 years private security, with 2 of those years as a supervisor.
This is where the rubber meets the road when balancing the needs of the contract with your front line service providers/employees. I would like this to stand as a open letter to Equinix Staff and Executive management about what is going on under their watch.

G4S currently holds the contact to provide physical security service to Equinix. This was a transition from Securitas roughly a year ago. One of the contract staffing stipulations required by Equinix is that new hires have 2 years data center security experience, this is a massive demand disparity because security officers with that kind of experience are either looking at being promoted or have established and cemented themselves at their current job and are not looking to move. Equinix's requirement is the largest problem in G4S being able to proactively staff IBX facilities resulting in officers having to work 16 hour shifts or only get 8-hour turnaround times. This has resulted in off the clock injuries and accidents. This issue causes Non-billable overtime creating G4S internal issues because managers bonuses become threatend with NBOT overages

this is further exasperated by other data centers in the area Google, Facebook, who all are staffed by G4S offer PTO accrual and provide meals/snacks at no cost to the contractors, while providing similar pay, ($16 - $19 per hour for security officers) ($20 - $26 for shift supervisors / training

Contract, SOP and hardware updates needed.

This company has fallen behind the times and needs to play catch up. 5 levels of security is a great selling point but other firms have fewer security measures and SOPs while were written in 2002 and have not been updated their systems are 10-12 years behind the times. The goal of being a REIT has done a lot to put money in the shareholders hands but little in the way of reinvesting into the structure and culture of the business, this is reflected in policy and Climate that comes from Executive and Management and Director level staff. (Second hand knowledge from water cooler discussions with IBX managers and contracted service managers working within/for Equinx.)

High turnover and poor retention are symptoms of problems with management and company policy

Things that can be changed with no fiscal impact to the company.

Connect and Consult with boots on the ground workers to revamp the SOPs for your physical security, provide training and development for all contracted workers to expand within the company should the contract provide it especially if it is not offered by the contracted company.

I do not want this to sound like just a complaint. So, the actual service that Equinix wants to provide is great and they do care about their branding the detail and customer service is a hallmark of the company.

IMHO Equinix would do well to identify key players in their contracted security provider and look at bringing them over and making physical security an in-house section. This can do well to enhance the branding as well as have security be an all-in provider that is equally viewed as part of the Equinix team.

The only thing at this point that keeps me coming to work is the pay check. I am currently looking to move to a different type of work.

The workload is tough enough for you to work very second and you do not have time to eat. Hr said lunch break was included in the salary packet. Stupid management policy increase the difficulties on smart hand and network issue. The most impressive is to spend 15 minutes to complete the work and spend over 1 hour to update what you have done on the equinix ticket

As an intern, the staff was exceptional in helping me succeed and learn about the company. I was constantly given help, if needed, on assignments I was working on. They were very interested in my improvement on the job, as I was always allowed to sit in on quarterly sales meetings with the team. All the employees there were very dedicated to their efforts, and I think that starts with the great company culture they have.

The company has strong revenues and stock price. They achieved their cost control goals by freezing hiring and overworking their existing employees. Often times setting unrealistic expectations and grinding good people until they can't continue. Lot's of praise given to sales and customer functions. Little if any credit given to the teams that keep the business running despite extreme budget restraints and non-backfilled attrition.

toxic work place! stay away! very demanding and stressful when they need coverage and if you say no its a big problem. you are just a number to them to fill the post and they have no problem replacing you.reliefs have no consideration for getting to work on time usually late. hardest part of the job was their out dated and complicated programs that always have issues. pay should be higher and the benefits are horrible. management loves to micro manage you in every way possible they also love to condescend you any chance they get. shaming you for petty errors becomes the everyday norm. they love to do petty monthly training's that do not have to do with day to day job duties.a job is a job but when the average person last at a site for a few months at some point you have to ask yourself why is the turn over rate so high.they need an undercover boss to witness the day to day operations of how each guard is treated.
